AIT Awarded Spirit A350 Driller/Fastener Contract
AIT AWARDED CONTRACT FOR SPIRIT AEROSYSTEMS AUTOMATED DRILLER/FASTENER SYSTEM
First Flex Track system with automated fastener insertion for substantial savings in time, labor, cost
PLANO, TX, - October 5, 2009 - Advanced Integration Technology (AIT), a leading industrial automation company delivering fully integrated plant floor systems to the aerospace industry, has been awarded the contract by Spirit AeroSystems to provide its new Flex Track Automated Drilling and Fastening Systems for the Airbus A350 XWB Section 15 composite center fuselage section assembly at Spirit’s newly announced facility in Saint-Nazaire, France.
The Airbus A350 XWB is a long-range, midsize, wide-body family of airliners and will be the first Airbus with fuselage and wing structures made primarily of composite material.
Based on the technology of its proven Flex Track automated drilling system, this new flexible AIT system answers Spirit’s need for both a drilling and fastening solution for the carbon fiber Section 15 frame longitudinal joints.
“We are thrilled to be able to develop and deliver additional technology to Spirit for the A350 XWB program,” said AIT President Ed Chalupa. “For Spirit, we augmented our proven Flex Track driller with an automated feature to install the fastener – a first of its kind for the Flex Track. The two portable, purpose-built systems we are developing have the potential to result in substantial time, labor and cost savings for Spirit.”
The automated AIT Flex Track system with fastener insertion is able to precisely drill, countersink, feed the fastener, apply sealant and install the fastener at the point of use, reducing the manual labor involved in previous generations while also improving hole quality. The AIT Flex Track systems are lightweight units for portability, a smaller “footprint” and cleaner factory environment.
AIT’s experience with its scalable Flex Track drilling systems for a variety of aircraft sizes and geometries includes recent programs, such as the Boeing 787, Embraer 170/190, Global Aeronautica 787, and Hawker Beechcraft Hawker 4000.
